Yo hace meses que traté de abrir mi cuenta de Gmail por mi cuenta (al final alguien me invito y así fué como la abrí). Pero hoy me llegó esto a mi buzón:

Amanda es un sistema sofisticado de respaldos en redes; La idea básica es que usted instala ‘clientes’ de amanda en cada máquina y desde un servidor central todos los datos son enviados por la red para ser almacenados en cinta o disco duro. Lo curioso de Amanda, aparte de lo sofisticado de sus opciones (como respaldo con tar, dump o control de niveles de reporte y compresión), es que no tiene el concepto de respaldo incrementales estrictos, sino que Amanda decide como hacer los respaldos para poder balancear la información en la cinta (eso no le impide a usted tener varias configuraciones de Amanda sin embargo).

Y por supuesto es Open Source

La parte complicada de un respaldo con Amanda es saber cuantas cintas vamos a utilizar, y cuanto es el nivel de utilización diario. Sin embargo, una vez entendido como trabaja es bastante natural ver como opera en la práctica.

Si bien la linea de comando es un poco intimidante al principio (amdump, amrestore), una vez acostumbrado todo se hace fácil; Yo lo tengo montado en varias redes y hasta ahora ha hecho muy bien su trabajo, además de que una vez instalado (con un programita en Cron) es sólo question de cambiar las cintas.

Yo en particular, lo que hago es enviarle un correo (un script en Perl, que llama a amadmin) a los operadores de el data-center para que sean ellos quienes me cambien la cinta (el más cercano que queda como a 25 minutos de donde vivo) lo cual es muy conveniente. Una de las deficiencias es que no soporta la ejecución de comandos ‘pre’ o ‘post’ del backup, así que lo que tiene que hacer es meter el comando de amanda en un wrapper.

Amanda cuenta con excelentes manuales en línea, soporte gratuito por parte de la comunidad (administradores de sistemas con mucha experiencia).

Asi que si quiere utilizar una herramienta sofisticada de respaldo en redes, de bajo costo, entonces es hora de usar Amanda.
